Ginger Red’s - An Interesting Visit
Our latest date night had us trying out a restaurant that we'd heard rave reviews about. Ginger Red's is constantly suggested whenever you're looking for delicious Chinese food in Richmond. We were eager to finally go and see what the hype was about.
We started off ordering the Potstickers, Spring Rolls, and some sushi to kick off our meal. I ordered the Tokyo roll, which was actually very disappointing. The rolls fell apart when trying to pick them up with chopsticks, and they had barely any shrimp on them. (The last piece of the roll actually had nothing in it but the inedible tail.) It came with a mayo drizzle on top that didn't taste like it belonged on the roll itself and wasn't very good. Luckily the spring rolls they brought us were good (and the dipping sauce was VERY good).
We were hoping to enjoy our potstickers before our food came out, but our server let us know they actually missed our order in the kitchen and so they would be arriving to the table in a few more minutes. When they did arrive, they were already lukewarm and were just okay. The dipping sauce was good but the filling wasn't very flavorful.
Our entrees were very good, thankfully! Alex ordered the orange shrimp and broccoli, and I ordered the Happy Family. It came out on a sizzling plate, and this dish was EXCELLENT and I happily took home the leftovers. The vegetables were cooked perfectly, and still had a bit of crunch to them. The shrimp and beef and chicken and the sauce it was cooked in was all very flavorful! (We also ordered a side of lo mein noodles to share so we'd be able to try them; these were not very good and we didn't finish them.)
Our appetizers took so long to come out they actually took them off the bill, which we didn't expect or need. They were very busy and everyone was hustling, but we're very grateful they went out of their way to accommodate us.
Overall, our experience was unfortunately very disappointing. While we know they were busy and mistakes happen, the service wasn't an issue here. So much of our food went unfinished because we didn't enjoy it. While we may order an entree or two for takeout in the future, we definitely don't have plans to dine in again.
