Another Broken Egg Cafe for Breakfast Away

Huevos Rancheros

We headed out to Williamsburg, VA this morning for breakfast. We had a gift card from Christmas we hadn’t used yet, and thought today would be a great time to get out of the house and head there (especially since Finn was awake at 5am)!

When we arrived, we were seated immediately and greeted by the server. She was very pleasant and helpful during our time there, and was very friendly with Finn who was not so patient during this visit and was definitely ready to eat.

I ordered the Huevos Rancheros which are usually a favorite of mine, however, they weren’t great this time. The description advertised black beans in the dish, but they came with pinto beans instead. The tortillas were super puffy chips instead of the usual flat tortillas the dish is known for. Unfortunately, this made them super soft and soggy almost instantly. I wouldn’t order the dish again knowing that it was so different than the usual I’ve gotten used to. The positive addition of the salsa, though, was super delicious and honestly some of the best I’ve had in a while.

Homestyle Potatoes

The potatoes were fine, but could use a little more seasoning. I’m also super partial to crispy potatoes, too, which may be why I wasn’t super thrilled by these.

Alex ordered the Bacqueso: a cheesy omelette with bacon and chorizo. It was cheesy, had a good amount of queso and lots of flavor, but was a little light on the chorizo and bacon. The Monterrey cheese on top was good, along with the green onions. The omelette itself was a tad bit overcooked, but not burnt. The fruit that came with it was definitely not fresh and a little dried out, but it still tasted fine. The cold brew coffee he ordered with it was not the best he’d had, but still good.

BACQUESO Omelette

Finn loved his kids meal of half a waffle and scrambled egg. (Full confession: Finn never turns down an egg, or a carb for that matter!) We asked for a little bit of peanut butter to add to the waffle to keep his nut exposure included his diet (to prevent allergy) and the server was so helpful and quick in getting it for us.

Overall, our breakfast was good but not great, and definitely not worth the 45 minute drive out to do it again any time soon. For now, we’ll stick to some of the local breakfast spots in Richmond that we love!
